Your average bar can be an ecological nightmare From plastic straws and bottle caps to excess water waste and fresh fruit throwaways, the world of mixology is not always associated with sustainability. But we believe great cocktails and environmentally conscious events should go hand in hand.
So, what are we doing at The Bar Guys to play our part?
Reducing Plastic Waste Behind The Bar
For a while now, you’ll have spotted paper straws replacing plastic straws across the hospitality industry — but who honestly enjoys sipping a beautifully made cocktail through a soggy piece of cardboard?
At The Bar Guys we’ve searched for better alternatives and introduced clever sustainable options, including Stroodle pasta straws. These innovative straws last for up to an hour, are flavourless, biodegradable, vegan, edible, and completely zero-waste.
In another effort to reduce our plastic usage, we also use dried lavender stems in place of plastic cocktail stirrers, adding both sustainability and a unique visual touch to our drinks.
You also won’t find disposable plastic cups on any of our bars. We believe cocktails deserve proper glassware; copper mugs, terracotta pots, vintage china teacups, and beautiful reusable serving pieces that can be washed and used again and again.
Not only is this more environmentally friendly, but it also adds a real wow factor to weddings, garden parties, and luxury events. Our vintage china teacups are especially perfect for summer celebrations and elegant outdoor weddings.

Less Waste, Better Events
Too often, empty bottles are simply thrown away instead of being properly recycled or reused.
To reduce waste wherever possible, we refill existing bottles using large eco pouches and boxed alternatives, which create a much smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional single-use glass bottles. We also reuse glassware and containers to store cocktail ingredients and garnishes behind the bar.
Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, and oranges are staple cocktail ingredients used daily for juicing, zesting, and garnishing drinks. However, in the UK alone, a huge percentage of fruit and vegetables are rejected before even reaching shops simply because they do not meet cosmetic standards.
Where possible, we replace fresh fruit garnishes with dried fruit stored in reusable glass jars, helping us significantly reduce fresh fruit waste during events.
In addition, when we do use fresh lemons and limes, we collect our leftover citrus waste and use it to create homemade limoncello and infused syrups. It’s a great way to reduce waste while creating completely new flavours and cocktail ideas.

Sustainable Cocktail Catering
Sustainability is about far more than simply reducing waste. It’s also about lowering the overall carbon footprint of your business and making smarter choices about sourcing ingredients and materials.
That’s why we aim to use local produce whenever possible and avoid ingredients that need to be heavily transported or flown into the UK.
We’ve also redesigned our cocktail menus to focus on seasonal cocktails, using ingredients that are naturally available throughout the year. By carefully creating smaller, more focused menus, we reduce unnecessary waste while still delivering exciting and creative drinks for our clients.
